Happy Valentine's Day...
Let me start with a warm welcome back to all our families from the Christmas Holiday. To our new families who have joined CDT we welcome you too!
Last autumn, CDT ran another successful fundraising campaign called Chocolates for Tutus. With the help of all the families we are now able to purchase 12 romantic tutus. Once again, thank you for your continued support.
This addition to our wardrobe makes a complete set. To date we have 12 romantic tutus and 8 pancake tutus. On behalf of the students thank you.
We will be using the romantic tutus in June along with the new bodices. The date for the performance will be June 9th, at the Westbury Theatre. Once again it will be a matinee.
In this newsletter, there is information about the new tax credit and how it will apply to families. There is also information about examinations and other exciting events involving the school including summer programs.
Check your calendars as summer is not that far away! Let's hope the Groundhog was right this year.
Regards,
Margaret Dalwood

Cecchetti Examination
The second term is well underway and the students are working harder than ever in preparation for the ballet exams in April. For many families the Cecchetti Examinations are new and families may have questions about the process.
These are professional examinations organized through the Cecchetti Society of Canada. An examiner is flown into the Edmonton area where approximately seven days of examinations will be held. (CDT has three of these days!)
The youngest level is the Primary Level. This is the first level of the children's grades followed by the major levels in the Senior School.
Each class will have a set syllabus to learn and it is with this vocabulary they will be examined. The examiner is looking at strength, technique and of course artistic and musical understanding at the appropriate level.
If you have any questions about the examination process, please see your ballet teacher. Examinations are not compulsory. Information letters will be coming home in the dance bags, please make sure you look for them as deadlines are very strict for registration.
Summer School
Dates for CDT's summer program are as follows.
Junior Summer School
July 16th-20th
Stagecraft 2007
July 29th- August 4th
The brochures for these programs will be available in March.
We are pleased to announce Evelyn Hart will be our guest artist-in-residence for Stagecraft 2007. The program last year was a wonderful experience for the students. Ms. Hart worked with all the dancers and was a true inspiration to everyone there.
The Junior Summer School will also have a week to refresh skills, try new dance moves and meet other children. This fun filled week includes mime; arts and crafts; study of the ballets and of course lots of creative dancing. Check out the program and see what everyone is talking about!

Cecchetti Workshop
The Cecchetti Society of Canada/Alberta Branch will be hosting a Ballet Workshop on Sunday November 26th. These classes are for students in Level 1 to Intermediate Foundation. We are recommending all students at CDT to attend this workshop. The ballet classes will be taught by Susan Brooker, F.I.S.T.D., Cecchetti Examiner and Enrico Cecchetti Diploma and is currently residing in Connecticut. What an opportunity for the dancers in Edmonton!!! Also on the schedule there will be Character Classes for each level! The students will have the opportunity to study classical ballet with strength and epaulement as seen in the Mazurka or Czardas of the ballets!
Parent Committee
At the last board meeting in the fall it was recommended a parent volunteer committee be organized to help facilitate some of the needs of the school. A few of the projects that need to be addressed immediately are school pictures; video taping the school performances; organizing volunteers for the school performance.
If you are interested in being apart of a small committee liaison with myself to help the school and the students please contact the school. Thank you.
Children's Fitness Tax Credit
Starting in 2007, families will be allowed to claim a maximum of $500.00 per calendar year for eligible fees paid for each child who is under 16. (Please see the Revenue Canada website for more information.) More information is still required on this topic. To date only fees actually paid after the 1st of January may be used. Fees paid prior to this date for programs which qualify in the 2007 calendar year, may not be used for the tax credit.
However, any fees throughout 2007 paid for an eligible program may be used towards your $500.00 tax credit. Confused? The website has information for all families and how this new credit will work for you. Please be patient as the system catches up to this new program. All receipts and invoices will be available for pick up in June.
A Special Thank You
To all the parent volunteers who helped backstage during the performance of Peter Pan, thank you. You were all fabulous! The effort in keeping the children entertained, making sure everyone was backstage for their cues was a tremendous effort and we are in great appreciation for it. To the lovely women and men who helped in the Christmas Tea, thank you for your patience. Cutting pound cake for 300 people requires just pure stubbornness. Thank you to all the families who donated items for props. From the trees to linen to curtains and styrofoam, we are very fortunate to have such generous families.
Without these volunteers the performances would not be possible. On behalf of the audience and the staff thank you!
